Can Bonomo, 24, was chosen by TRT to represent Turkey in this year's Eurovision contest, putting an end to months of speculation and debate.

Playing classical guitar when he was 8-years-old, he told SES Türkiye, "From my very early ages, my biggest ambition was to combine poems and music to compose."

He studied in the Cinema and Television Department at Bilgi University and worked for various TV and radio stations while a student.

He released his first album "Meczup" (Lunatic) in January 2011.

After TRT announced its selection, people second-guessed the choice, asking whether a better known artist would have been preferable, and wondering whether Bonomo was favoured within TRT. Some focused on his Jewish religion and ethnic roots, in a country struggling to overcome religious and ethnic boundaries.

Bonomo opts to avoid endless polemics. "I’m not doing popular music, but prefer an alternative one. So, I understand all the initial reactions towards me when TRT made its official announcement," he says.

He plans to perform a song emphasising peace, friendship and happiness.

In the past, TRT preferred well-known musicians like Sertab Erener or Hadise, but the choice of Bonomo could pave the way for younger artists.

Music industry representatives, ranging from performers to music critics, have mostly rallied to support him in representing Turkey.

"I’ve known him since 2006 and I noticed his creativity from the moment when he started his career in radio programmes," said Tolga Pozam, former radio broadcaster. "I think that the quality of his music has been increasing since I know him. I can describe him as an alternative urban singer having a modern bohemian spirit, which is also very clear in his latest album."

His fans hope he selects an original song for Eurovision, far from clichés and showing his creativeness. "He should have fun and entertain the audience at the same time," says Pozam.

Bonomo told SES Türkiye that he hasn't decided on a song yet. "We have basically three alternatives: some of them are in Turkish and some are in English," he explained, noting that songs in English have a better chance of winning.

Bonomo says being chosen to represent Turkey abroad is a great honour. "In the past, all musicians representing Turkey were successful in their own style."

His music combines elements of rock and electronic music, along with pop melodies. He is mainly influenced by bands like The Beatles, The Libertins, or the Kinks. The song he sings at the Eurovision contest is expected to be in the same style.

He also intends to show the cultural richness of Turkish music. According to music critics, his personal style of music will be unique and full of surprises. He likes to write the lyrics with comedy.

"I like Bonomo's music because it is funny and distinct," says fan Zeynep Toker.

The contest will be held from May 22nd to 26th in Baku, Azerbaijan.

First of all, I wish Bonomu a very successful competition. I thank Ms. Menekse Tokyay very much, who made this reportage and enlightened us sufficiently. A very successful study was done. I congratulate Ses Turkey for keeping such a staff in its structure. Thanks. B.B.Kolak

    He is more than disgusting.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

He is not “beyond bad”, he is a “beyond super” artist.

To my opinion, not only Turkey but all countries have less chance against Adele. Between us, I’ve felt a bit inconvenience when the priority is given to Can Bonomo while there are some very strong artists in Turkey. But this is a reality that Can Bonomo is quite successful. He has an interesting style. His music is rich. I support him.

If we participate in Eurovision with this song, a third-to-last place is guaranteed.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

I bet you 10,000 liras Can can’t manage to rank among the last 10 countries, let alone the first 10 of them. I think he will rank third or maybe seventh to last.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

He is good-looking, but his voice is more than terrible.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

I think he has got a beautiful voice. His music is rich and his behaviors are different. He has got a very different style.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

The song is very nice, but there are not many effects.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

Disgusting! Even Arif Susam (a Turkish singer) would have been a better choice. Turkey cannot be successful with this song. I think authorities should re-consider.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

I liked Can and his song. He is likable to begin with. He has got a super style. We liked the song very much. Whoever I asked said they liked it. Try to support him instead of demoralizing him. I believe that everything is energy. Let’s support our artist. I wish him success.

Turkey will not be able to make it to the finals.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

    It’s a great song.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

This is a very bad song. I wonder how it can represent Turkey. I believe it can only come third to last.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

If this song achieves any success, then it means I have no musical taste at all.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

This song can only come in last.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

    bence süperrr:))

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

The song is perfect. I am your biggest fan. I read in your interviews that you have about 10,578 fans.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

To hell with those who say it is disgusting! It is a very nice song.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

    He is a stupid performer.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

I didn’t like his song, but still I wish him success. Unfortunately, it’s going to be a year lost for Turkey.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

    It’s a nice song.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

Can Bonomo has got a great voice.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

Super, very stylish music, we’ll absolutely be No.1.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

Super, for me he is No.1, furthermore he is very cude.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

I wish it could be in Turkish.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

We can be No.1 only within the worsts. Did they find this after all efforts?

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

Frankly speaking, he is very sweet and very handsome. It’ll be better if he dances less… :)

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

Just a wonderful piece, to my opinion beyond perfect, absolutely No.1.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

Song can not be reached by any means except TRT Music channel. TRT Music should have done a mute record because you can’t hear the sound, the sound is low despite all my efforts. At the moment, publicity is insufficient. It must be more creative. A colorful stage can be created with a dance show group. In this group, especially ladies should take part. And gathering of the instrumentalists at the end of the song was nonsense for me. If the dance group make their performans in the center, being No.1 will be inevitable. We can organize this contest in 2013… To my opinion, his success is possible. Can Bonomo can be successful if he works on it and some practices are done with some considerations. Why shouldn’t we organize this contest again? Nothing is missed. We’re a country evaluating the opportunites nicely. When this one is being addressed and if we make our song bettered and more listeable among the countries, and secure easy access from the internet, then the success will come as points naturally… I wish a successful year, my heart wishes being No.1. Can Bonomo, you should work hard for the success… The power to manage this already exist in the superior blood running in your vessels…

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

I congratulate Can Bonomo. He has a very interesting style and he has only 1 album so far. I liked the song for Eurovision. It’ll be within first 7 ranking, at the MINIMUM.

  • Anonymous translation missing: en_GB, datetime, distance_in_words, almost_x_years

To my opinion, if Atiye would be joining we would be No.1. However with this song we’ll be No.1 from the end. A terrible song but still, I wish him success.

Nice song, different, especially dances are quite interesting, I liked it much.

    Nice.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

Very well done. To me, the man is sympathetic, his type is enough, song is super too.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

Why the song did not open?

  • Anonymous over 2 years

Nobody can say idiot to Can Bonomo, OK?

  • Anonymous over 2 years

Rubbish! The boy is elected finally. Song is very joyful and pleasant. I liked it very much. It will represent our country. I wish you could give some support.. You should say that he is the elected one and should wish him succes. Furthermore ADELE is great but her song is really not better than Can’s. Although he is an amateur, he had written a very nice song. I’ll not make any assumption. I cannot say First 3 but I hope that he will get them too. Also Can has a lot of time ahead. I think he should not woryy about this. I believe he’ll be a successful artist. I deeply support him.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

    Very nice, great :)

Although its words are not expressed clearly, it’s very beautiful.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

    We’re absolutely No.1.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

It’s a nice song, but it’s not the song of 2012. I think my song, “Ekvator” (Equator) is better than his. I’m a musiciand and my nickname is “wabor”.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

Some people do not even know how to spell disgusting. Idiots! You will see what will happen at the contest.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

I think the song is great and his moves are fun, adding a different spirit to the song. It would have been weird if he simply stood there while singing.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

I think it is a nice song. It doesn’t matter if others like it or not because they do not understand arts and songs. That is why they are stupid. I think the song beautiful. Thumbs up for Can Bonomo!

  • Anonymous over 2 years

His English is good and he’s got a deep and strong voice. I don’t agree with those who didn’t like the song. I think it is nice. It’s almost perfect. His dance moves are a little weird, but it adds spice and zest to the song. Many thanks to Can Bonomo …..Guest

  • Anonymous over 2 years

His voice is not beautiful at all.

    Not too bad!

I think Can Bonomo is very cute and has a very beautiful voice. Those, who call him disgusting, are plain vulgar.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

    Nice song!

  • Anonymous over 2 years

As a Turk and Turkey, why don’t we join with the songs in our own language, Turkish or Kurdish? If we’re Turkey, we should reflect the world in our own language and power. Stop joining with songs in English anymore. Let the world know us in music as well. Let’s absolutely not join the next Eurovision with songs in English because we have a very beautiful language.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

You idiots, you sacrifice yourself for Can, you don’t have any brain I think, remember well, in 2005 there was a woman called Gülseren with a strange music. You’ve accepted her as idiots and now can’t accept Can? My God, you’re betting too? I bet that the ones who don’t like Can will wander like idiots..

  • Anonymous over 2 years

Mr.Can will absolutely succeed to be number one, his voice is super and he is very nice too. I liked him very much, I hope he will be successful. God save him all the time.

Can Bonomo, I loved your song, you’re great. I’ve been listening to you everywhere, at school, at shopping and I love you.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

So super, clearly I love him.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

In Eurovision, being yourself is sufficient. You either be great or not, our hearts will be with you.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

A very beautiful song, it will certainly win.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

For me it’s super but it seems that there is a kind of insufficiency on the screen.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

    Disguisting.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

It’s been a very nice song, I fully support. I hope it will succeed. I respect everybody’s comment, finally they’re their own comments but I liked it, furthermore joyful and active. It’ll be great with a good presentation, I believe in this. Wish you success.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

    Very beautiful.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

Musical basis of the song is very good – and the use of violins. Bonomo has a beautiful voice, but he should not make too much voice plays. That’s not good – even sounds as if he is teasing the audience. He may sing in a more balanced way. I wish him success. The song is fine and may be ranked at a good place. We are supporting him. All he needs to do is be confident and perform his song. Good luck!

  • Anonymous over 2 years

Adele doesn’t have a nice song other than Rolling in the Deep. Don’t overestimate her.

  • Anonymous over 2 years

    Your song is very beautiful.
